But is looking at our own face for hours every week having a detrimental effect on how we feel about our appearance? A recent Oxford University medical journal has reported a 55% increase in face and neck cosmetic surgery in men and women since the beginning of 2020. Surgeons have termed this the 'Zoom effect'; a result of workers spending increasing amounts of time looking at their own faces and features while working online. There has been a particular increase in men seeking treatment to alter their jawline and make it more 'chiselled' with strong, clear bone structure. Much like diets, when we tell our brain that we are cutting out a particular food, it can begin to consume our thoughts. For binge eaters, at some point, that pressure to eat the forbidden food will become too much. A better approach would be not to tell yourself that certain foods are 'good' or 'bad' and that some are off-limits.
