How to refer a patient for a Pre-cosmetic Psychological
Assessment
Cosmetic surgeon contacts Body Image Therapy to complete a referral
Body Image Therapy contacts the patient to arrange a one-hour zoom/in person assessment
Within 48 hours of the assessment a comprehensive report is sent to both surgeon and patient. The report will outline risks, protective factors, and recommendations.
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT INCLUDES
Use of disorder specific measures to identify Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Eating Disorders and Depression.
Psychiatric history and mental health diagnosis’
Psycho-tropic medication
Body image and appearance concerns throughout the lifespan and their impact
Previous cosmetic interventions
Current psycho-social functioning
Client’s knowledge of Surgery and their Motivation, Expectations & Attitudes
Current life stressors

Onward Referral for Psychotherapy
If a patient requires psychological support Body Image Therapy can help with:
-eating disorders
-body dysmorphic disorder
-anxiety disorders (health, general, social)
-depression
-phobias (needle/general anesthetic)
-OCD
-difficult life events
-pre-surgery nerves
-post-surgery support
The patient is under no obligation to commit to a certain number of sessions however, in line with NICE guidance we recommend a course of twelve sessions of CBT for BDD, OCD, Eating disorders, Depression and Anxiety disorders.
patient progress report
A progress report will be written by the therapist at the end of the last therapy session. A copy will be provided to the client who can then forward this to the surgeon. The report will detail the psychological changes from the assessment to the last therapy session.
